Start with the Film Application
PE blown film is used for a wide range of products, including shopping bags, liners and general packaging film. These applications do not all have the same requirements. Before selecting a filler masterbatch, define the finished film’s purpose, appearance and performance targets.
Step 1: Confirm Resin and Grade Compatibility
Identify the PE resin used in your blend and share the grade information with your supplier. Ask whether the proposed filler masterbatch is intended for your resin system and blown film process. A grade suitable for one formulation may not behave identically in another.
Step 2: Agree on the Key Quality Indicators
Choose measurable indicators before testing. Depending on the product, these may include:
- Film appearance and dispersion
- Thickness consistency
- Bubble stability and ease of processing
- Tensile or elongation performance where relevant
- Sealing behavior and finished-bag performance
- Odor or other application-specific requirements
The relevant tests should reflect your end use and customer specifications. Do not rely on appearance alone to judge film quality.
Step 3: Run a Controlled Trial
Use the supplier’s recommended starting range and record your normal operating conditions. Keep the resin blend, film thickness target and machine settings as consistent as practical. If you compare different addition rates, change one variable at a time so the results are easier to interpret.
Record the actual addition rate, output, temperature settings, bubble behavior, film appearance and test results. Compare the trial film with your existing production baseline.
Step 4: Review Trade-Offs, Not Just Price
The lowest price per kilogram does not necessarily mean the lowest overall production cost. Consider dosage, process stability, scrap, finished-product performance and consistency between batches. Use measured trial results and your own cost model to make the comparison.
Step 5: Confirm Specifications Before Bulk Orders
Before approving a grade, document the agreed material description, packaging, batch identification, delivery requirements and quality acceptance criteria. If the application is sensitive, discuss whether incoming inspection or periodic production checks are appropriate.
Questions to Send Your Supplier
- Is this grade suitable for my PE resin and blown film process?
- What addition rate should I use as a trial starting point?
- Which technical data and quality checks are available?
- Can I obtain a sample for a machine trial?
- Which operating or end-use limitations should I consider?
Trial Checklist
- Record resin type and formulation.
- Confirm target film thickness and end use.
- Document machine settings and addition rate.
- Inspect film appearance and dispersion.
- Test the properties required by your customer.
- Compare results with your baseline before scaling up.
Make the Next Step Evidence-Based
Filler masterbatch selection should be based on compatibility, controlled trials and the requirements of the finished film. Share your application details and trial goals with your supplier so you can assess the proposed grade using clear, agreed criteria.
